Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi champion bold new vision for The Arts Theatre’s future
Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen and friends champion our ambitious redevelopment vision in a new short film – watch now!
The Story Behind Our Film:
Earlier this year, as our redevelopment works began, legends of stage and screen — Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Derek Jacobi and Sir Richard Eyre — came together to create a remarkable film. Their collaboration supports the most ambitious transformation of our theatre in its 90-year history — a once-in-a-generation project that is not only reshaping our physical space but also reimagining how we engage with our audiences, artists, and community.
Today, we are proud to share the powerful film they created. We hope it inspires everyone who sees it to share it — and to become part of our story.

What’s Happening at the Theatre Now?:
Phase One (now underway):
We are at the mid-point of the first phase of our redevelopment to fully refurbish the main auditorium and backstage areas while preserving the Theatre’s beloved character. We are enhancing the experience for audiences and visiting artists – with new seating, improved sightlines, and upgraded front-of-house and backstage facilities.
Phase Two (in planning):
Plans are underway to build a brand new 200-seat rooftop studio theatre – a dynamic space for new writing, emerging talent, and community programming that will help secure the Theatre’s future for generations to come.
With heartfelt thanks to David and Susie Sainsbury through the Gatsby Charitable Foundation for their generous support.
